Australian ETF assets rise $6 billion in February

Global equities ETFs attracted the highest investor cash inflows once again in February. Here’s how investors invested.

Investors added another $1.72 billion into Australian-listed exchange traded funds (ETFs) in February, bringing total ETF inflows over the first two months of 2024 to $3.5 billion.

February ETFs data released by the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) shows total assets under management across the Australian ETF industry reached another record high of $184.68 billion.

This was an increase of $6.17 billion over the previous record of $178.51 billion set at the end of January.

Vanguard maintained its top place in the Australian ETF industry as the largest issuer by assets under management, with $53.15 billion invested across 29 ETF products as at 29 February 2024.

The Vanguard Australian Shares Index ETF (VAS) – which invests in the top 300 ASX companies – remained the largest ASX-listed ETF, with $14.70 billion of assets under management.

Meanwhile, the Vanguard MSCI Index International Shares ETF (VGS) – which invests in more than 1,400 large listed companies in over 20 countries outside of Australia – ranked as the third-largest ASX-listed ETF with $7.33 billion in assets under management.

How investors invested

Global equities ETFs attracted the highest investor cash inflows once again in February, with more than $1.04 billion flowing into a broad range of funds investing in international markets.

This accounted for 61% of total ETF inflows and added to the $928.90 million invested into global equities in January.

Australian equities ETFs received the second-highest inflows over the month ($315.17 million), representing just under 20% of total ETF inflows, with Australian bonds ranking third with $242.98 million of inflows (14.1%).

Infrastructure ETFs accounted for $111.91 million of inflows (6.51% of total ETF inflows), followed by global bonds ($57.34 million, or 3.51% of total ETF inflows). Meanwhile, cash ETFs recorded combined outflows of $98.10 million.
